As a general guide, most horses will require a total food intake of around 2% of their own body weight per day. The ratio of hard food : hay could be balanced as under :-

Light Work

40% Hard Food

60% Hay

Medium Work

50% Hard Food

50% Hay

Heavy Work

60% Hard Food

40% Hay

The table following has been prepared to be used as a guide only, as several factors determine horse's needs e.g.

  • 1   Variation among horses in the individual needs.

  • 2   The amount of food eaten, and the amount of food wasted.

  • 3   The enegy contents of the different feeds.

  • 4   Weather conditions.

  • 5   Whether the horse is still growing etc etc.......

Try to always feed the amount needed to maintain your horse at optimum bodyweight and condition.
